Tiger Woods ‘revved up’ after impressive opening at Valspar golf championship
A revved-up Tiger Woods said the juices are flowing after making a strong start to his Valspar Championship campaign. The 14-time major champion carded a one-under-par 70 to be tied for eighth in Palm Harbor, Florida on Thursday.
It was a topsy-turvy outing for Tiger Woods,
who had five birdies to go with four bogeys as he ended the opening
round alongside Masters champion Sergio Garcia and three shots behind
leader Corey Conners.
“The (juices) are flowing. I’m revved up. I love competition,” Tiger Woods said following his round.“I
have a great pairing this week. Jordan (Spieth) and Henrik (Stenson)
are two great guys. Very competitive. Have had great years.”
Tiger Woods' second round at the Valspar Championship began with a "Fore," but also a 4. Woods, following a roller-coaster opening round, had an eventful par on his first hole Friday, the par-4 10th.Following a par at the par-5 11th, Woods stuffed his approach shot on
the par-4 12th. The birdie got him to 2 under par for the tournament and
two off the lead.
He then hit another great iron into the green at the par-3 13th,
converted the 6-footer for birdie and got to 3 under ... just one back.Woods parred his final five holes on his opening nine and made the turn
in 2-under 33. At 3 under, overall, he was one shot off the lead.
Woods opened with a 1-under 70 in “brutal” conditions Thursday at
Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course. He will now look to not only make
his third cut in four PGA Tour starts this season but also put himself
in position to improve upon a 12th-place showing two weeks ago at the
Honda Classic.
We’ll track Woods’ second round, played alongside Jordan Spieth and
Henrik Stenson, shot by shot for all 18 holes Friday in Palm Harbor,
Fla.
NERVY MOMENT
Tiger Woods – making his first appearance at Innisbrook since 1996 – survived a nervy moment when his left arm hit a tree. The
42-year-old, whose career has been derailed by back injuries, pulled
his tee shot on the par-four 16th hole as the ball ended up in front of a
tree.
Trying to play his way out of trouble, Woods made contact
with the tree but the American star avoided injury as his club went
flying in the air.
“It didn’t feel very good,” Woods added. “I moved all the people and
even warned them in case the club breaks and gets over there.”
